Baton Rouge: Initial unemployment insurance claims for the week ending Dec. 7, 2013, increased to 3,159 from the previous week's total of 1,850. Fewer initial claims were filed the previous week of the Thanksgiving and Acadian holidays resulting in the over-the-week increase.
The industries with the largest over-the-week increases in initial claims were construction, health care and social assistance, administrative and waste services, and retail trade. Initial claims were below the comparable week ending Dec. 8, 2012, figure of 3,516.
The four-week moving average of initial claims increased to 2,557 from the previous week’s average of 2,444.
Continued unemployment insurance weeks claimed for the week ending Dec. 7, 2013, increased to 24,160 from the previous week’s total of 22,425. The industries with the largest over-the-week increases in continued claims were construction, professional, scientific and technical services, and administrative and waste services. Continued weeks claimed were below the comparable week ending Dec. 8, 2012, figure of 31,287.
The four-week moving average of continued weeks claimed increased to 22,957 from the previous week’s average of 22,539.
The total number of people who filed a claim for regular unemployment insurance in Louisiana, and received at least one check during the reference month, decreased to 19,678 in November 2013, down 708 from 20,386 in October 2013.
