Henderson: The Louisiana Department of Natural Resources’ Atchafalaya Basin Program (ABP) announced today that construction is underway for a boat launch facility at Bayou Amy in St. Martin parish.

The Bayou Amy boat launch will be located directly across from the Atchafalaya Basin western guide levee in Henderson. The project includes a boat launch, parking area and floating docking facility. The construction work is being performed by Matt Durand Construction of St. Martinville and the project was designed by Comeaux Engineering and Consulting.

The cost for the construction of this facility is approximately $561,321, with the state contributing $229,000 of that total from the DNR Atchafalaya Basin Program.

According to St. Martin Parish President Guy Cormier, the additional funding comes from the St. Martin Parish Coastal Impact Assistance Program (CIAP) funds. With CIAP funds, future improvements at the site will include an educational pavilion, self-guided nature walk, and new restroom facility.

Town of Henderson Mayor Sherbin Colette said, “Already the excitement is peaking as the dirt is being moved for what I believe will be one of the hot spots of the area.” Mayor Colette noted that this project has been a planned vision for so long, but it won’t be long before boaters will be able to venture from this attraction in Henderson and end up at Lake Fausse Point, if they choose.

“I am anticipating seeing so many people, young and old coming to examine the beauty of this area, the water, fishing, and enjoying the Atchafalaya Experience,” noted Mayor Colette.

DNR Secretary Stephen Chustz said, “We are looking forward to the completion of another water access project, in particularly this one, where so many area fishermen plan to utilize the facility. Alongside members of the local community, will be visitors and tourists who will have another access point to enjoy the natural resources of the area.”
