Louisiana Unemployment Insurance Claims Report: July 22, 2013

For Release On:

July 24, 2013

Baton Rouge:  Initial unemployment insurance claims for the week ending July 13, 2013, increased to 3,764 from the previous week's total of 2,084. Initial claims were above the comparable week ending July 14, 2012, figure of 3,675.

The four-week moving average of initial claims increased to 2,975 from the previous week’s average of 2,763.

Continued unemployment insurance weeks claimed for the week ending July 13, 2013, increased to 26,467 from the previous week’s total of 25,008. Continued weeks claimed were below the comparable week ending July 14, 2012, figure of 36,268.

The four-week moving average of continued weeks claimed increased to 25,354 from the previous week’s average of 24,849.

Two factors contributed to the over-the-week spike in initial claims. The previous week was cut short by this year’s two-day Independence Day holiday, which resulted in a boost in claims the following week by those unable to file in time for the holiday deadline. Also, the week ending July 13 marked the start of a new quarter for new claims, when some claimants regain their eligibility for benefits, typically resulting in an increase in initial claims. The over-the-week increase in continued claims was also affected by the shorter holiday work week.
