Lake Charles: A one-of-a-kind hiring fair for veterans, transitioning active duty military, National Guard and reserve members and their spouses will take place Tuesday, Aug. 7, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Lake Charles Civic Center Exhibition Hall, 900 Lakeshore Dr. The Louisiana Workforce Commission is partnering with several organizations for Hiring Our Heroes, which will help connect Lake Charles area veterans and their spouses seeking employment with more than 50 employers looking to hire. Participating employers include PPG Industries, CITGO Petroleum Corp., L’Auberge Casino Resort, Lake Charles Memorial Hospital, Cheniere Energy Inc., Merrill Lynch, Progressive Insurance, Baker Hughes, Isle of Capri Casino, First Federal Bank of Louisiana plus many other businesses in various industries. To help get veterans back into the workforce, federal tax credits are available to employers who hire unemployed veterans and also those with service-connected disabilities. The Veterans Opportunity to Work Act provides employers tax credits of up to $9,600 for hiring veterans. Veterans can offer valuable experience and leadership skills and often make strong job candidates. Sponsors of the event include the U.S. Chamber of Commerce, the Greater Lake Charles Chamber of Commerce, the U.S. Department of Labor's Veterans’ Employment and Training Service, Louisiana Committee of the Employer Support of the Guard and Reserve, Southwest Louisiana Economic Development Alliance and NBC News. Since the launch of Hiring Our Heroes in March 2011, more than 220 hiring fairs in 48 states, Puerto Rico, and the District of Columbia have been held resulting in 10,400 veterans getting jobs, the U.S. Chamber reports. Veterans should bring copies of their résumé and be prepared to interview on the spot. The fair is free and registration is required by Friday, Aug. 3 for job seekers and employers.
