How do I register to vote?


The Open Primary/Congressional/Presidential Election is scheduled on November 6, 2012.

You must be registered 30 days prior to an election to be eligible to vote in that particular election. The last day to register for the November 6, 2012 Election was October 9, 2012. There is no cost to register to vote. Registering to vote is a right afforded to you as a United States citizen by the Constitution of the United States. 

To register to vote, you must: 

  • Be a United States citizen
  • Be at least 17 years old but must be 18 years old prior to next election to vote
  • Not be under an order of imprisonment for conviction of a felony
  • Not be under a judgement of full interdiction for mental incompetence or partial interdiction with suspension of voting rights
  • Reside in the state and parish in which you seek to register.

How do I register to vote? 

Online: You can apply online to register to vote or make changes to your registration at: http://www.sos.la.gov/OnlineVoterRegistrationOVR/tabid/955/Default.aspx

In person: Complete a Louisiana Voter Registration Application form at any Registrar of Voters office.

A directory list of Registrar of Voters offices by parish is available online at: http://www.sos.la.gov/Portals/0/elections/pdf/COC-ROVlist.pdf

You can also register to vote at any of the following sites:

  • Louisiana Department of Motor Vehicle offices
  • Louisiana Department of Social Services offices and WIC offices, Food Stamp offices, and Medicaid offices
  • Offices serving persons with disabilities, such as the Deaf Action Centers and Independent Living offices
  • Armed Forces Recruitment offices

By mail:  Apply to register to vote by mail by downloading the Louisiana Voter Registration Application form, completing it, and returning it to the Registrar of Voters office in the parish where you are registering. The list of Registrar Offices is included on the form.  A copy of the Louisiana Voter Registration Application form is available online at: http://www.sos.la.gov/Portals/0/elections/pdf/F%20VoterRegApp_Rev05-11_.pdf

This Voter Registration form can be also be used 1) change your address, 2) request a name change, and/or  3) change party affiliation.

Faxed Voter Registration forms are not accepted. The Voter Registration form should be addressed and mailed or hand-delivered to the Registrar of Voters in the parish in which you are registering.
